John 19:28

In these last Seven Sayings Jesus has declared “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34
Luke 23:34 NKJV
34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots.
He’s stated, “Today shalt thou be with Me in paradise.” Luke 23:43
Luke 23:43 NKJV
43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
Jesus also said to Mary , “Woman, behold your Son.” John 19:26
John 19:26 NKJV
26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!”
And then He cried out from the cross, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken Me?” Mark 15:34
Mark 15:34 NKJV
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
Yet these sayings don’t really pain the picture of what was going on. Jesus was put on trial for claiming to be the King of the Jews. By Roman law, this was punishable by death. Although Pilate found no wrong in Him, but because of the people punished Him to death.
Jesus was beaten, spat on, had a crown of thorns placed on His head, nails placed in His hands and feet, and pierced in His side. The sky was completely dark for three hours, and earth shook, but as we read the text for my saying, found in John 19:28 “28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!””
Many scholars believe that Jesus had been on the cross for six hours when He muttered these words. Even from the cross. Jesus showed us that He was all man because of His thirst, and all God, because of His fulfillment of Scripture. Psalm 69:21b
Psalm 69:21b NKJV
21 They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
So tonight, as I preach about Jesus’ thirst, my question to all of you is, “What Do You Thirst For?”
I just have three quick points concerning our thirst. SODA/POP represents SIN. These are the things that we desired before Christ, and often times after Christ. Most of us know that there is nothing in this can of Coke that will ever quench our thirst, yet we seek after it still the same. Galatians 5:19–21 “19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Romans 6:23 states, “23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Then we have a bottle of Gatorade that has the slogan of “The Thirst Quencher.” However, did you know that Gatorade is full of sodium and other harsh chemicals. Gatorade represents SELF. 1 Corinthians 10:24 states, “24 Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being.” Or 1 John 3:17 “17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?” Gatorade may promise to quench our thirst, but it never will.
Finally, we have water, which represents the SAVIOR. These are the things that you and I should desire and chase after. Jesus declared in John 4:14 “14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”” and again in John 7:37–39 “37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
So again, I ask this Question, “What Do You Thirst For?” Is it the things that we know are no good for us? Or will we seek after those things that “look” good, but are no good either? Or will we seek afther the things of Christ?
